Takao Yajima

What were the reasons for deciding to accept them?

We started accepting foreign workers more than 30 years ago. In fact, the labor shortage in the construction industry is nothing new. At that time, a certain number of structural workers in the Kanto region also worked in agriculture, and many of them prioritized agriculture during the rice harvest and planting seasons. Therefore, in order to secure a stable workforce, we started accepting Chinese workers.

What were the benefits of accepting it?

The job of steel reinforcement is physically demanding and requires a lot of strength. While technical skills improve as you reach your 50s and 60s, you still can't compete with younger people in terms of physical strength. To increase productivity as a company, it's extremely important to have young, physically fit foreign workers, and we're truly grateful for their help.

What measures or precautions do you take after accepting them?

The best way to build good relationships with foreigners is through mutual communication. That's why I've learned a little Chinese so I can have conversations. I can naturally understand greetings, numbers, and simple short sentences from everyday conversations, so it's not particularly difficult. I believe that it's because we make that effort that they are motivated to learn Japanese.

Please send a message to companies planning to implement this system.

These days, you can see people of various nationalities working in konbini and other places. It's becoming increasingly difficult to meet the necessary workforce with Japanese workers alone, and this isn't limited to the construction industry; it's likely true for most sectors. We're now in an era where we need to seek talent from overseas. Cultivating skilled foreign workers is essential. Please consider taking on this challenge.
