What prompted you to focus on accepting them?

In 2024, we underwent a major organizational change. We decided to shift our focus from a Japanese-centric organization to a team composed solely of Indonesians, aiming for success. Initially, I was apprehensive, but once we entrusted them with the task, a sense of unity developed within the company. We also received increasing praise from colleagues, who commented on the impressive work of our foreign team members. Ultimately, I feel it was a turning point. It truly was a case of turning a crisis into an opportunity.

What are the reasons for giving positions to foreigners?

I believe that people grow through taking on managerial roles. Giving them responsibility broadens their perspective and makes them role models for their juniors. When we changed our organizational structure, we decided to proactively entrust foreign employees with managerial positions, such as section chief and department head, in stages. They are also taking on responsibility for on-site planning and labor management, and we are sharing an awareness of numbers and time with them.

What initiatives are being undertaken after the acceptance of the participants?

For about six years now, we've been running an activity called "Garbage Rangers." Once a week, early in the morning, all employees participate in picking up litter in the neighborhood. It started with the teaching, "If you find it, pick it up. You're accumulating good karma." We didn't want it to be just a simple cleaning activity, so we deliberately wear superhero costumes. Over time, we've even been invited to participate in local festivals. We started it not for self-promotion, but for learning purposes, and it has ultimately become an important time for fostering a sense of unity within the company.

You're also very active in community activities, aren't you?

To broaden understanding of our acceptance of foreign workers, we publish a company newsletter every month. Originally, we started this with the desire to show families in Indonesia what their children were doing at work. Currently, we include it with invoices and insert it into the Chamber of Commerce's newsletter to reach our business partners and the local community. We believe it is our role to convey the reality of the situation on the ground and create an atmosphere where accepting foreign workers is not something unusual.

Voices from those working on-site

We spoke with AAH and KARNO, Indonesian employees of the company, about their work and life in Japan, as well as their future goals.

アアー
I want to study in Japan, a country full of dreams, and eventually start my own company in my home country!

He came to Japan because he felt it was a country full of dreams. His future goal is to become a company president, and since there are hardly any scaffolding materials like those in Japan in Indonesia, he chose the construction industry thinking, "If I learn this technology, I can use it in my home country." Currently, he is in a position to manage the construction site as a section chief, and he says that studying financial statements has made him more conscious of "doing things for the company and for everyone" by teaching him how to think about profits and expenses.

カルノ
I enjoy working with my Indonesian colleagues every day.

KARNO became interested in Japan because she wanted to see cherry blossoms and snow. She said that she was initially bewildered by the strict time management and work procedures at Japanese construction sites. However, as she studied financial statements, she came to understand that sales and profits were directly linked to their work. Now, as a section chief, she is also in charge of creating drawings, and her responsibilities have increased. "Every day is fun," she said with a smile.
