Yoshiaki Hoshino

What were your reasons for deciding to use the service?

Our division has been employing two Specified Skilled Worker since 2023, primarily as drywall installers. They are also involved in tasks other than drywall work to improve their construction techniques and skills, contributing to the progress and efficiency of construction sites. Therefore, we decided to have them take special training courses on full-body harnesses and scaffolding, and we determined that JAC's online special training, which can be learned in their native language, was the most suitable option.

Did you feel there were challenges with teaching in Japanese?

While we provide Vietnamese-language materials for some of our initial training, we lack sufficient safety training materials that can be used on-site. Furthermore, in our four annual safety training sessions for skilled workers, we conduct practical exercises using tools while explaining in Japanese to check understanding. However, we were unsure of the extent to which employees were truly understanding the material.

Please tell me about future developments.

For example, instead of immediately having someone perform rigging work after obtaining a rigging qualification, we want to create a system where they can gradually acquire other qualifications and become accustomed to the work. Our goal is to help them acquire skills that can be used in practical work over a period of one to two years, and we want to support them in obtaining the necessary qualifications.

Voices from those working on-site

We interviewed DUNG and ANH, two Vietnamese students who took the online special training course, about what they learned, how they are applying it in their work, and their future goals.

DUNG
Safety awareness during work has increased more than ever before!

DUNG said she has come to realize anew the importance of preventing accidents and troubles. She particularly appreciated being able to learn in Vietnamese, as it allowed her to fully understand the content. "I've become more conscious of checking my surroundings when working on scaffolding." Although she can understand it to some extent in Japanese, she said she was able to understand it more deeply in her native language.

I think the biggest advantage is being able to learn in your native language.

ANH said she learned a lot about safety measures and precautions. "I realized that with only Japanese, I could only understand things vaguely, but with Vietnamese, I could grasp everything properly," she said. "My awareness of safety regarding wearing a full harness and working on scaffolding has increased. In the future, I would like to learn about house framing and roof construction to broaden my skill set," she added.

It was well-received, with comments like, "It was easy to understand because it was in Vietnamese!"

These two individuals, the first to be accepted into our division, are currently working as drywall installers. Because their work is similar to that of a carpenter, they obtained qualifications in scaffolding and full-body harnesses in anticipation of business expansion. They found the online special training very helpful, saying it was "easy to understand because it was in Vietnamese." Being able to learn in their native language and the convenience of online learning were extremely beneficial.
