What were the reasons for deciding to accept them?

The construction industry still has a strong image of being a "3K" industry (tough, dirty, and dangerous). Because of this, for about the past 10 years, we've seen a situation where young people aren't joining the company, or if they do, they don't stay long. We had predicted that the time would come when we would need the help of foreign workers, so we started accepting them in 2014.

What were the benefits of accepting it?

First, before accepting them, I went to Vietnam to meet them in person, and I was convinced that they were young, cheerful, and capable of leading the company's future. Since actually welcoming them, we've built a friendly relationship with them. Thanks to them, the Japanese employees in the company have also regained their cheerfulness, and the company atmosphere has become much younger.

What measures or precautions do you take after accepting them?

They come to Japan relying on us. But conversely, our work depends on them. When you think about it that way, we rely on each other, so there isn't much difference in our positions. That's why I always try to treat them as equals. They tell jokes and we joke around with each other. I never act superior just because I'm the president.

Please send a message to companies planning to implement this system.

What I've realized after actually taking them in is that they are all incredibly talented and capable individuals. That's why it would be such a waste to simply use them for menial tasks. Money is important, but first and foremost, it's crucial to properly teach them the skills they need, skills they can use for a lifetime. I sincerely hope that they will be trained to become accomplished craftsmen while they are in Japan.

Voices from those working on-site

We spoke with three individuals—Long Specified Skilled Worker (ⅱ), QUY Specified Skilled Worker (i), and HUYNH Technical Intern Trainee)—about their work and life in Japan, as well as their future goals.

LONG
Being able to become Specified Skilled Worker (ⅱ) and bring my family over is what makes me happiest.

"It has always been my goal to continue working in Japan," says LONG. In October 2023, he became the first person in Kyushu and only the second person in Japan to obtain Specified Skilled Worker (ii) in the formwork industry. "Now I can bring my family to Japan. I was also able to get my driver's license. Now I can live with peace of mind. That's what makes me happiest right now," he said with a big smile.

クイ
I found the formwork work interesting and I came to love it!

QUY who became Specified Skilled Worker (i) in 2021, started working in the Japanese construction industry to support her family. After actually working on-site, she said, "I found the formwork work very interesting and I've come to love it. I'm even enjoying the difficult tasks." She and Mr. Ron are from the same hometown, and he has always taken care of her. "He's a really kind senior colleague." We look forward to her success following in the footsteps of her respected senior colleague.

フイン
I aim to become a great foreman who can serve as a role model for others!

HUYNH has passed the N2 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and is very good at reading and writing. "But I'm not so good at speaking (laughs)." She came to Japan because she heard it was a beautiful country with abundant nature and wanted to live there. When she actually came here, she was "amazed by the beauty of the rivers." Her goal is to become like Mr. Long. "I aim to become a great foreman who can be a role model for others!"
