Takashi Kamiyama

What were the reasons for deciding to accept them?

My interest was piqued when a friend's company started hiring Filipinos, so I contacted a sending organization. At the time, we weren't in need of manpower, but I heard there were many talented people overseas, so I decided to accept some. In the end, I met JESSIE, so it was the right decision.

What were the benefits of accepting it?

Just as the sending organization said, there are a lot of truly excellent and hardworking people among them. The construction industry can be very tough and demanding depending on the type of work. Lately, I've been hearing more and more stories about young Japanese people getting discouraged and quitting, but these guys have really stuck with it. I'm incredibly grateful.

What measures or precautions do you take after accepting them?

I'm not doing anything overly dramatic; I just try to increase our interactions outside of work, like having meals together, drinking alcohol, and going cherry blossom viewing in the spring. Also, and this goes without saying, what I'm really careful about is not yelling or using harsh language. Now that I've taken them in, I treat them with the intention of raising them with care, as if they were my own children.

Working in a foreign country is undoubtedly more challenging than one might imagine. Some may even say, "I want to go home." But the most important thing is that they feel happy they worked in Japan, since they went to the trouble of joining your company. I hope you can give them experiences that will positively impact their lives, such as being able to build a house in their home country or finding Japanese technology useful in a job they take after returning home.

I want to be as kind to my juniors as I was to them.

JESSIE obtained her Level 2 Certified Skilled Worker in 2021, said, "I struggled with the written exam because it was in kanji, but I was able to pass thanks to the support of those around me." She said she has a family-like relationship with the president and her senior colleagues, and added, "When I first joined the company, I was scared of being discriminated against, but I was really happy that they accepted me so kindly." She said that now she wants to be kind to the younger colleagues who will be coming from her home country.

Having friends from my hometown both at work and in my private life makes it the best!

IVANICK decided to come to Japan after a friend who works as a carpenter there told him, "Japan is a really great country." "There are tough times since I came here, but I really enjoy working with the colleagues I've met at this company." In his free time, he plays basketball with his Filipino colleagues on weekends. "We're all good friends, and I feel fulfilled every day!"

I want to keep working hard at this job until my sons grow up to be fine adults!

RETCHIE used to work in electrical installation in the Philippines. When asked why he chose to work with rebar, he said, "It's the same construction industry, so I thought I could manage it (laughs)." He has two sons, aged 13 and 11, and he wants to work hard at his current job until they graduate from university. "Someday I'd like to invite them to Japan and live with us." His current enjoyment comes from drinking parties in his room with JESSIE and IVANICK.
