Interview Host Companies

Representative Director
Iwao Oka

What were the reasons for deciding to accept them?

Over ten years ago, I went to Cambodia on a company trip and became friends with a local guide. That's when I learned that many families in Cambodia still live with low living standards, and that experience motivated me to continue supporting orphanages and other institutions there. The hosting program started as part of that effort.

What were the benefits of accepting it?

Sinat, who works at our company, has completely overturned the negative image that Japanese employees often have of "foreigners." Not only is he excellent at his job, but his thoughtfulness is also exceptional. For example, on a cold winter morning, he'll start the car engine before we leave to warm up the interior for his colleagues. It's no wonder that he's so well-liked.

What measures or precautions do you take after accepting them?

What I always tell my employees is, "Even if you are in a leadership position, you must put yourself in a lower position." Just because you are a superior doesn't mean you should look down on your subordinates. It is essential to stand by and support those who are in a weaker position than you. Everyone at our company understands this and stands by Shina-kun. I truly respect these employees.

If the foreigners we welcome come to love Japan, they will want to stay here forever. Conversely, if they come to hate it, they won't love the company either. First, think about how you can make them love Japan. I cultivate fields with them, go out for fun, and teach them how to pray at shrines. I hope you all will also make an effort to make them love this country.

My colleagues and superiors often tell me I'm "more Japanese than the Japanese themselves" (laughs).

After working as Technical Intern Training in Wakayama Prefecture for three years, she returned to her home country and taught Japanese as an instructor at a sending organization. As a result, she is fluent in Japanese and can hold everyday conversations without any problems. Outside of work, she grows vegetables in a field near her company housing and visits shrines on her days off, and her colleagues and superiors say she is "more Japanese than the Japanese." When asked about the charm of Japan, she says, "Above all, the people are kind." Currently, she is studying hard to obtain a driver's license so that she can be of service to the company.

Shinat could definitely become a site supervisor!

Shinat is fluent in Japanese, learns quickly, and is incredibly attentive to detail, so it feels like we've hired a highly capable young Japanese employee. He absolutely refuses to sit down until his seniors have already sat down. Even while other employees are on break, he anticipates what tools will be needed for the day's work and prepares the equipment. Regardless of his nationality, he possesses an excellent character as a person. With his talent, I believe he will one day become a site supervisor.
