Interview Host Companies

President and Representative Director
Shinichiro Tsukada

What were the reasons for deciding to accept them?

After working for a general contractor, I returned to my family's company when I was 35. At the time, we had about 50 outsourced craftsmen, but considering the declining birthrate and aging population, I felt a sense of crisis that if we did nothing, our company would inevitably face a labor shortage. So, through Japan Plasterers' association I was introduced to The Construction Industry Promotion Foundation, and that's how we started accepting Chinese workers.

What were the benefits of accepting it?

To maintain the size of our company, we absolutely need to secure personnel. In our case, we recruited experienced Plastering, and when we interviewed them on-site and saw their practical skills, we were confident that they would be able to contribute immediately. The language barrier wasn't much of a problem; time resolved that issue.

What measures or precautions do you take after accepting them?

Since we are looking for people who can hit the ground running, we have the local team recruit people with experience in Plastering work as a requirement. I also attend the interviews and check their practical skills. Many of Host Companies are concerned about the level of Japanese language proficiency, but I don't place that much importance on it. In my experience, Chinese people can read kanji, and Indonesians have received solid language training beforehand, so communication is not a major problem.

Please send a message to companies planning to implement this system.

Just because someone is a foreigner doesn't mean they're inferior to a Japanese person in terms of technical skills. My impression is that all of our foreign employees are at a level where they could easily pass the Level 1 Certificed Skilled Worker Certification exam, provided they can overcome any language barriers. We're entering a tough era where only proactive companies will survive. I see myself as their mentor, and I'm determined to grow together with them. If you're struggling with a labor shortage, why not consider hiring some foreigners?

Voices from those working on-site

We spoke with Ms. Zhou and Ms. Wang, both from China and working in Japan under Specified Skilled Worker (i) about their work and life in Japan, as well as their future goals.

China
XU YUNKUI
In Japan, I was surprised by the level of safety at the worksites, as well as the sincerity and kindness of the people.

According to XU, the biggest surprise when he started working in Japan was the awareness of safety on construction sites. "The idea of 'safety first' was thoroughly implemented. Also, Japanese people are serious about their work, so the quality of construction is different from that in China." He was also impressed by the president's personality, saying, "He always cares about our lives, like providing us with rice. That's something I really appreciate."

In Japan, where construction technology is advanced, I want to learn more about Plastering!

WANG, who previously worked as Plastering in China, heard about Japan's advanced construction technology and decided to come to Japan to experience Japanese Plastering firsthand. "I review work-related materials whenever I have time to acquire skills and knowledge," he says, demonstrating his strong desire to learn and his diligent work ethic. He also revealed with a smile that he is a big karaoke enthusiast, saying, "I'm not very good, but I love singing."
