Kazuaki Funabashi

What were the reasons for deciding to accept them?

We had originally employed a Vietnamese designer since 2014. His work ethic was outstanding; he was not only capable at his job but also strong with numbers and had a great sense of atmosphere. With the expectation that other Vietnamese people would surely be just as talented, and with the desire to employ fellow Vietnamese people to make it easier for Vietnamese designers to work, we began utilizing the Foreign Technical Intern Training Program in 2015.

What were the benefits of accepting it?

I was amazed by their high level of motivation for work. Of course, there are individual differences, but a common characteristic of theirs is their good intuition when it comes to work. Basically, they come to Japan with the determination to learn the job, so they are not afraid to take on any task and quickly master it.

What measures or precautions do you take after accepting them?

Vietnamese people don't follow a seniority system; those who joined the company earlier are treated as seniors. Therefore, even if you're older, if you joined later, you'll be treated as a junior by those younger than you. However, being ordered around by someone significantly younger isn't exactly a pleasant feeling. So, when assigning people to work together on-site, we consider factors like age differences and personality.

They are working hard in Japan, having left their home country. Seeing them like that brings us joy as a company in supporting their lives, and personally, seeing them grow is the greatest reward. It seems that some Japanese people distrust them. But if you think about it, "What if I were working in a country with a completely different environment?", I think you'll see what you should do for them.

Voices from those working on-site

We spoke with ANH and HIEP, both from Vietnam, who are working in Japan under Specified Skilled Worker (i), about their work, life, and workplace environment in Japan.

ANH
The positive work environment is a great source of support, allowing me to do my best in both my work and life in Japan!

ANH works hard every day to send money back to her parents and siblings in Vietnam. She lives in a company-provided dormitory. "I don't feel lonely because I have fellow Vietnamese friends in the dorm. On weekends, I sometimes drink with the Japanese employees from the company, so it's lively and fun." Her smile showed how close the employees are.

ヒエップ
I want to continue to live up to the expectations of my "dad" who kindly taught me the ropes!

HIEP is fluent in Japanese and is able to communicate with craftsmen on site. He is highly trusted by the company and calls his senior colleague, Nagase, with whom he always works, "Dad," and their teamwork is excellent. "Dad has been kind to me and taught me the ropes ever since I first came to Japan. I want to continue working with him for a long time to come."
